A newcomer to PKMNTCGO. Can someone please explain to me what is up with expansions and sets?

    Posted: 10 Dec 2019 12:06 AM PST

So I have played quite a bit of digital cards games, but I'm a newcomer to the Pokemon TCGO. I understand the game well, however, I for the life of me cannot seem to understand how many expansions there are and the different cards with the same name. So I have few questions for clarification.

    • What are expansions and what are sets? Are Cosmic Eclipse and Hidden Fates expansions? Then why are there 10 different sets in each expansion?

    • Why are there cards with the same abilities from the same pokemon printed on different sets? Like for example Rapidash from Generations and XY-Flashfire have the same abilities with the same HP. The only difference is in the card art. Why were they printed in two different sets if they have the same exact abilities?

    https://shop.tcgplayer.com/pokemon/xy-flashfire/rapidash?partner=PkmnCards&utm_campaign=affiliate&utm_medium=PkmnCards&utm_source=PkmnCards

    • How man formats are there? Is it just Legacy, Expanded and Standard? Can anyone explain to me what expansions/sets are allowed in each? Or direct me to a site that has a detailed list of each?

    Thanks for the help.

    Hacking?

    Posted: 09 Dec 2019 10:50 AM PST

I was playing a match online and was about to beat a Whimsicott-GX player 6-0. I play Beheeyem with Alolan Ninetales and just had the superior control deck. After getting to my last prize card and swinging once onto his Whimsicott-GX, the turn went to him. Like the rest of the game he didn't play anything (since he was item locked) and couldn't attack through the Ninetales. The one energy he had attached to his active went back to his hand (recycle energy) though his pokemon didn't retreat. Then the game board froze and neither of us could do anything. The timers still ticked down and forced me to pass every turn and him to pass every turn without doing anything. Is this some kind of known hack or result of disconnecting mid game? I've been playing for a few months and have never seen this happen.

Welder card destroyed me by the 2nd turn

    Posted: 09 Dec 2019 08:46 PM PST

I swear idk if he had a lucky first hand but i had my only basic in hand Raikou up and his first was Charizard and Braixen, uses a Welder card so now he has 2 fire energies AND he can draw 3 cards, attaches another one, meanwhile raikou only has 1 energy. 2nd turn he has 4 energies and obliterates me with brilliant flare, game.

He may have been lucky but even so what a ridiculously strong support card

It may just have been bad luck but aren't cards like that a little strong?

What do I do against Meowstic and Ear Influence.

    Posted: 09 Dec 2019 03:17 PM PST

I just played someone who was just moving my damage counters around for a solid two minutes. Just bouncing them between two of my Pokémon.

Did it for a long while for 3 turns.

    Understanding pack ratios [help]

    Posted: 09 Dec 2019 02:43 PM PST

After looking through the posts here, I think I understand how to read trade values on ptcgoguide [1].

For example, if I have a "Gardevoir & Sylveon-GX". The guide says it is worth 8. CEC packs are each worth 1. So to get back full value I would need to trade the card for 8 CEC booster packs.

    Is that correct?

    Thanks in advance.

Edit: Please don't DM for trades, I would like a real answer. Thanks :)

    Rapidash OP

    Posted: 09 Dec 2019 10:05 PM PST

Just got manhandled by a Rapidash in theme tournament. I literally had multiple stage 2s ready to attack but he kept getting the coin to flip head everytime. It was frustrating to say the least. I generally feel like the integrity of Pokemon as a whole is decreasing. :(
