I bought all the most powerful PTCGO theme decks and want to review them here

    Posted: 06 Dec 2020 10:19 PM PST

I started playing this game four weeks ago and have been hooked on it ever since. I created my account on November 9, 2020, although it feels like I've been playing a lot longer. Most of my time has been spent using theme decks in Trainer Challenge and Versus Mode. I've been trying to spend my tokens on the strongest theme decks, so I used these two threads on Reddit to determine which ones are the most efficient for easy wins:

    https://www.reddit.com/r/ptcgo/wiki/themedecks

    https://www.reddit.com/r/ptcgo/comments/c38xpo/quick_theme_deck_faq_for_newbies/

My statistics as of December 6, 2020 look like this:

Total Cards Drawn - 26275 Cards

Total Damage Done - 745150 Damage

Total Damage Taken - 391440 Damage

Total Games Played - 1247 Games

Total Game Points - 1076 Game Points

Total Time Played - 6 Days

Lifetime Tournament Rep - 0 Points

Total Upset Wins - 72 Upset Wins

    Different Cards Owned - 1262

    Total Cards Owned - 2388

Set Nearest to Completion - Sword & Shield-Darkness Ablaze

    Complete Sets - None

Most of One Card - Professor Kukui (Sun & Moon #128)

    Foil Cards Owned - 198

Although I know what most of those numbers mean, I don't really have a sense of scale for them, like how big they really are. All I know is that I've been using mostly theme decks in Trainer Challenge and Versus Mode for 28 days. Mental Might is available to start with in online, but I've never used it. You also have the three starter decks: Crushing Current, Hidden Depths, and Born of Fire. They contain some interesting cards, but I wouldn't really say they're competitive.

In addition to the four decks that you start with, I've earned enough tokens to buy 17 theme decks. I bought every single theme deck that had at least a three out of five star rating on the first link and/or a tier 4 rating or above on the second link. So basically, I took every 3-5 star rating and every tier 1-4 rating and combined them into one list that happened to have exactly 17 theme decks. I didn't know how else to determine which ones were worth buying.

In my opinion, the difference in quality is vast. There is a very clear cutoff point between the strong decks and the weak decks. Out of the 17, I found 7 good decks and 10 bad decks. I will sort them by good vs. bad, and then briefly describe them in alphabetical order. This is just my opinion, and it mostly applies to the time I spent grinding to 36 wins for each deck in the Trainer Challenge, plus some where the daily challenges required me to use cards of different types.

I do want to put out a disclaimer that I'm the type of player who likes to go out and destroy everything in a short period of time. I don't like decks that involve stalling or a lot of setup. I like decks that get powerful really fast and annihilate the opponent with a lot of damage quickly, so that biases my opinions below. Just an explanation for why I think the way I do.

The 7 good decks in alphabetical order:

Blazing Volcano (Colorless/Fire/Grass) - Wow, Entei/Magcargo can be a really powerful combination... if you can pull it off. It requires a bit of setup and is quite cheap once you get it going, but somewhat unreliable compared to Relentless Flame. I found Shuckle and the Grass Energies to be utterly pointless.

Mach Strike (Colorless/Dragon/Fighting) - All you need to do is pull out Garchomp and Lucario to win the game, but many things can go wrong here. And while Garchomp is strong, it's also not that strong. 100 damage or 200 damage if you played Cynthia this turn... some of the other decks are able to deal higher damage more consistently.

Relentless Flame (Colorless/Fire/Psychic) - Not much needs to be said here. Getting out Nidoqueen and Charizard is like an instant victory button, but it's infuriating when you can't find the pieces you need because they're in your prizes or something. Also, I feel like Farfetch'd and Brock's Grit slow this deck down.

Rillaboom Theme Deck (Colorless/Grass) - There's no question that this is the deck to use for daily challenges involving Grass. Rillaboom is insanely powerful, alternating between 180 and 90 damage every turn. Maractus is no slouch, either. It can be very frustrating to go against this deck in Versus Mode and get wiped out so easily.

Storm Caller (Colorless/Electric/Psychic) - In my opinion, this is the weakest of my seven "good" decks. Ampharos and Raikou make for a rather broken combination, but the setup is slow and unreliable. Zebstrika and Naganadel aren't that useful by comparison, so they often end up being dead draws.

Torrential Cannon (Colorless/Water) - Get out Blastoise, and your opponent is going to have a hard time. It doesn't matter what type their deck is, because Blastoise will wipe out just about everything. However, the rest of the deck isn't that great.

Unseen Depths (Colorless/Water) - Empoleon is overpowered just like Blastoise, but in a completely different way. Empoleon has the ability to snipe benches, which is essential for ridding your opponent of their weak monsters before they become Stage 2 Evolutions. This is largely luck-dependent and player-dependent, but Empoleon has the power to absolutely ruin some decks.

The 10 bad decks in alphabetical order:

Battle Mind (Colorless/Dragon/Fire) - You'd think that a deck with Incineroar and Mewtwo would be extremely powerful. No, it's actually quite weak. Not horrible, but not great either considering that you have better Fire options with Relentless Flame and Blazing Volcano.

Hidden Moon (Colorless/Fire/Psychic) - My god, what is this thing? You need Lunala (and maybe Bewear or Salazzle) to pull off anything, making this deck too unreliable to be of any use.

Hydro Fury (Colorless/Fire/Water) - Terrible, just terrible. Water and Fire do not go together. It's mostly just Swampert that runs this whole deck, and indeed its damage potential is insane. However, I don't like everything else going around this deck.

Imperial Command (Water) - This is a different Empoleon, and in my opinion not nearly as powerful as the one from Unseen Depths. Absolutely no reason to use this one.

Leaf Charge (Colorless/Grass/Electric) - Whoever said this was a good Grass deck? They lied to me. The Electric-type is nearly useless here because you'll rely on Sceptile to accomplish anything. Just like Swampert from Hydro Fury, you can dish out a ton of damage and sweep your opponent for the rest of the game, but everything else about this deck is worthless.

Lightning Loop (Colorless/Electric) - You know, this one is actually... okay. You have some interesting choices with Magnezone, Stunfisk, Zeroara, and Dodrio. The problem is way too much drawing power, way too much switching around, and way too much running into dead ends with not being able to attack or play Supporter cards.

Luminous Frost (Colorless/Fire/Water) - Again, too many useless cards. It might be a different story if you can get out Alolan Ninetales or Bouffalant, but even then, they're not that powerful. The rest of the deck is terribly weak.

Rock Steady (Colorless/Fighting/Psychic) - I hate to admit it, but this one might actually be my favorite of the 10 decks I consider "bad." You have some pretty good choices for attacking with Lucario, Lycanroc, Meowstic, and Rhydon. By contrast, Rhyperior happens to be less useful and only comes in handy during an extreme emergency.

Tropical Takedown (Colorless/Dark/Fighting) - This one is easily my least favorite of all the decks. It is incoherent, disorganized, slow, and altogether weak with its five different Energy types. What's the point of all these Energy cards that are only good for one Pokemon? Never mind that all the Pokemon themselves are pitiful except Exeggutor and Alolan Marowak, and even that's questionable. Without a doubt the worst deck on this list.

Twilight Rogue - All right, not great, but we have some okay attacking options with Lycanroc, Dusknoir, and Salazzle. I wouldn't call any of these cards strong, but they kind of get the job done. One of the better "bad" decks along with Rock Steady and Lightning Loop, but nothing to write home about.

All right, there you have it. My synopsis after 28 days of PTCGO and experimenting with 17 theme decks. What do you think? Are there any changes I could make to my playing style to get better at the game?

    Competitive decision vs beginner decision

    Posted: 07 Dec 2020 08:19 AM PST

So I play a few games yesterday and ran into this scenario a couple of time. Deck I played with was orbeetle/sandslash. I start out with a oranguru or some supporting pokemon. I have quick ball in hand or pokemon communication, nothing else in hand that can help draw cards. Should I quick ball for a dedenne or crobat or should I quick ball for my orbeetle?

Dispose of Vivid Voltage packs now?

    Posted: 07 Dec 2020 12:38 AM PST

I understand there's not a lot of good cards in the set. Should packs be disposed now as value is dropping fast? Is it better to trade them for cards or packs?

    Expanded Yata Lock

    Posted: 07 Dec 2020 03:36 AM PST

Yata is a reference to a Yugioh monster that stops your opponent from natural drawing.

This lock does the same. You'll need to employ typical control tactics like hand disruption with BKT Mismagius or N and Counter Catching a non immediate threat that can't retreat. Drone Rotom is an interesting new option. You'll likely want to run draw Cincinnos.

There's a Luvdisc with a move called Heart Wink and when it's paired with the Supporter Will, stops your opponent from natural drawing. The next step is to keep using Will. Double Supporter Magnezone + Molayne + Mt. Coronet + Pal Pad will prevent deckout and allow you to loop Will. You can lastly proceed to win the game with something like Decidueye GX pinging everything.

    Centiskorch Labyrinth deck?

I have an almost perfect centiskorch vmax deck, but I was considering adding a copy of wondrous labyrinth, since the attack costs are almost always exceeded anyway. Any thoughts?

new to ptcgo, when will be the next ban coming?

    Posted: 06 Dec 2020 10:45 PM PST

Want to decide on what card should I invest in. If it still playable for 1year then its worth it. I heard Japan will be banning cards labeled B on 2021 February. So when will that ban be on ptcgo?

    Expanded Welder Cramorant Deck?

    Posted: 06 Dec 2020 08:43 PM PST

    Hey y'all,

I used a couple decklists I saw online to create a Cramorant deck, but it has not been as successful as I would have liked. Could anyone give me some recommendations to play in Expanded? I figured I needed a secondary attacker, and I don't think Entei is the right choice. I couldn't think of anything else though. Thanks so much!

    Quick Advice Wanted

    Posted: 06 Dec 2020 07:10 PM PST

New player. I'm doing well with my standard deck and accumulating plenty of daily coins. I looked a bit into expanded, and I was wondering if it could be a good idea to redeem Boundaries Crossed packs to try to randomly crack a Computer Search.

It seems like a lot of lists run one in their toolboxes, so having one trade locked copy would be fine. Similarly, I redeem DA packs to try to open a trade locked Crobat so I might be able to offload my tradable one before the special Crobat box releases.

Just spitballing since I don't otherwise know what packs are good for opening potential expanded staples.

    Double Colorless Energy

    Posted: 06 Dec 2020 05:46 PM PST

So I have multiple double colorless energy. While scrolling my collection, I have noticed that I have a twin energy card. Why would you use a twin energy if you have double colorless?

Twin Energy: Provides 2 normal energy to non GX/V Pokémon. Provides one normal energy to GX/V Pokémon.
